EGRET (Energetic
Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope)
onboard the satellite
COMPTON-GRO (Gamma
Ray Observatory)
The COMPTON-GRO has been a NASA observatory, located in
orbit around Earth from April 1991 to June 2000. This observatory was equiped
with different instruments, capable to detect high-energy emission, namely
gamma-rays, coming from space. You can see below an artist impression of the
COMPTON-GRO satellite.
In the figure below you can see the location of each one
of the 4 instruments that were part of COMPTON-GRO. The EGRET instrument,
which was sensible at energies between 20 MeV and 30 GeV, was 10 times greater
and had an angular and energetic resolution much better than the similar instruments
available before the launch of this satellite.
It has been recently published the third
catalog containing the sources detected by EGRET. We show below the positions
of these sources in galactic coordinates, where the galactic plane corresponds
to the horizontal line. The position of the gamma-ray source 3EG J1824-1514
has been marked with a white dot near the center of the coordinate grid. As
can be seen, most of the sources are still unidentified, especially in the
galactic plane zone.
