When I was Born

A l'any quaranta,
quan jo vaig nàixer,
encara no havien mort tots.
In the year fourty,
when I was born,
not everyone had died yet.

A l'any quaranta,
quan jo vaig nàixer,
encara no havien mort tots.
In the year fourty,
when I was born,
not everyone had died yet.

Molts es varen quedar,
havien guanyat, diuen.
Molts es varen quedar,
havien perdut, diuen.
D'altres conegueren
l'exili i els seus camins.
There were many who stayed,
they had won, they said.
There were many who stayed,
they had lost, they said.
Others would know exile
and walk along its pathways.

A l'any quaranta,
quan jo vaig nàixer,
jo crec que tots, tots havíem perdut.
In the year fourty,
when I was born,
I believe all of us, all of us had lost.

Jo no he vist aquelles morts de ràbia,
jo no he vist aquelles morts de fam,
jo no he vist aquelles morts al front,
jo no he vist aquelles morts a les presons.
No, jo no ho he vist, i tot m'ho han contat.
I encara avui al meu poble ho conten.
I encara avui la gent que ho ha vist, amb por ho conta.
No, jo no ho he vist, ni vull veure-ho mai.
Ni a l'any setanta, ni a l'any quaranta,
ni en cap any dels anys.
I did not see those deaths of rage,
I did not see those deaths of hunger,
I did not see those deaths at the battlefront,
I did not see those deaths in prisons.
No, I did not see it, everything was told to me.
And the people in my town are still telling it today.
And still today, those who saw it tell it with fear.
No, I have not seen it, and I never want to see it.
Not in the year seventy, or fourty,
nor in any of the years to come.

A l'any quaranta,
quan jo vaig nàixer,
jo crec que tots, tots havíem perdut.
A l'any quaranta...
In the year fourty,
when I was born,
I believe all of us, all of us had lost.
In the year fourty...
