Jordi Torra, new director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IECC)

Last July, Jordi Torra, professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Barcelona, was appointed director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC), affiliated centre with the University of Barcelona. Torra’s main objectives are to promote the capabilities of IEEC research groups and to favour synergies, as well as to give more visibility to the institute as leading research centre on astronomical and space sciences in Catalonia and abroad.

Laying the first stone of the prototype of the LST (Large Size Telescope)

On Friday, October 9th at five o’clock in the afternoon, the ceremony of the stone laying for the biggest Cherenkov telescope in the northern hemisphere, the prototype of the LST (Large Size Telescope) with a diameter of 23 metres, took place at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) on the island of La Palma.

CHEOPS Contest for children between ages 8 and 14

Send your drawing into space!

3,000 European children's drawings, including 250 from spanish children, are going to be launched into space together with CHEOPS. (Characterizing ExOPlanets Satellite) CHEOPS is a telescope that aims to identify new planets outside the solar system --- known as exoplanets --- .

The drawing contest is an initiative of the European Space Agency,  with the collaboration of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) and the Institute of Astrophysics of Canarias (IAC).

ESO ASTRONOMY CAMP 2015

ESO (European Southern Observatory) organizes every year an astronomical camp in the Aosta Valley (Italy). These stays are aimed at encouraging astronomical vocations among students and are adapted to the general framework of teaching: bilingualism, promotion of science education and values education (effort, companionship, creativity, etc.)
