MAGIC Galactic meeting 2013

On 12 and 13 September 2013 a meeting of the Physics Working Group on Galactic sources of the MAGIC Collaboration took place at Facultat de Física of UB. A total of 20 researchers attended the meeting, which has been organized by members of the Departament d'Astronomia i Meteorologia of UB. Possible observational proposals with the MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes of sources of very high energy gamma rays were discussed in the meeting. Some of these proposals will be submitted for evaluation during October, to conduct observations during MAGIC Cycle 9, which starts in November 2013.

SonCube to the edge of the Space

Next Saturday 7 the probe stratospheric SonCube will be launched for the second time from MónNatura Pyrenees (Les Planes de Son culd), driven by a helium balloon and carrying several cameras, as well as experiments designed by secondary school students.

This second realization has had the participation of the Department of Astronomy of the Universitat de Barcelona, the Institute of the Sciencies of the Cosmos, the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia, and Fundació Catalunya - La pedrera for the organization contest SonCube: experiences on the edge of space "through which the two winning students, Ada Fontrodona and Marta Puig, and his teacher Gerard Farràs (Arrels School, Solsona) have had the opportunity to design and build the main experiment that will carry SonCube and that will measure the presence of various gases in the stratosphere.

A PhD student of the Department participates in a study on the cooling of the stratosphere published in Nature

Albert Osso, a PhD student of the Department of Astronomy and Meteorology
has participated in Colorado State University study led by Professor David JW Thompson that calls into question the knowledge that we had hitherto on the cooling observed  in recent decades on the stratosphere due to the destruction of ozone and rising greenhouse gases.

The study was published this year in the journal Nature under the title "The Mystery of recent Stratospheric temperature trends."

Europe bids Gaia a safe Journey

ESA's billion-star surveyor, Gaia, has completed final preparations in Europe and is ready to depart for its launch site in French Guiana, set to embark on a five-year mission to map the stars with unprecedented precision.

To explain Gaia mision, the Department of Astronomy and Meteorology of the University of Barcelona has produced the exhibition "Mil milions d'ulls per a mil milions d'estrelles" . It was presented at the Parc astronomic del Montsec the ast July 1st. The exhibition also can be seen in digital format:  http://www.am.ub.edu/expogaia

Three Planets in Habitable Zone of Nearby Star

A team of astronomers has combined new observations of Gliese 667C with existing data from HARPS at ESO’s 3.6-metre telescope in Chile, to reveal a system with at least six planets. A record-breaking three of these planets are super-Earths lying in the zone around the star where liquid water could exist, making them possible candidates for the presence of life. This is the first system found with a fully packed habitable zone.
