Job for two students. CLOSED.

    The Gaia group (Department of Astronomy and Meteorology at University of Barcelona, Institute of Cosmos Sciences, Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia) is looking for two students to join a multidisciplinary team of astronomers and engineers, to operate, test, monitorize and evaluate the efficiency of a software for massive processing of scientific data, for the ESA's Gaia space mission.

    Tasks and responsbilities:

    Position 1: IDU

    • Operationof the Gaia processing system at Barcelona.
    • Launch simulations on MareNostrum-BSC.
    • Execution and analysis of cyclic processing system efficiency tests.
    • Work as a member of the quality control team and document and execute defined test cases.
    • Prepare and execute "scripts" test, document test results and review the "scripts" as needed.
    • Improve the automation of the system as needed.

    Position 2: IDT

    • Supervision of the Gaia data processing system at Madrid.
    • Analysis of the daily processing results.
    • Execution and analysis of performance tests on the daily processing system.
    • Work as a member of the quality control team and document and execute defined test cases.
    • Prepare and run test scripts, document test results and review scripts as needed.
    • Improve the automation and monitorization of the system as needed.

    Required  skills for the two positions:

    • Knowledge of object oriented programming languages (Java, Python, ...).
    • Knowledge of Linux / bash and shell scripting (including Awk).
    • Knowledge of LaTeX (for documenting), SubVersion, Eclipse and GNUplot will be positively valued.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Documentation skills.
    • High level of English (reading, writing and speaking).
    • Team-work ability.

    We will make a brief aptitude test in order to prove the mentioned abilities.

    Contract: part-time.
